The Backgammon Olympiad

The Backgammon Olympiad is a one-of-a-kind event designed to put your Backgammon skills to the test. In Stage 1 competitors will play four variations of Backgammon to include DMP, SpeedGammon, score based scenarios and standard 7-point matches. Stage 1 will conclude with a most challenging Backgammon Quiz.

The top eight players from Stage 1 will advance to an eight-player playoff bracket. This bracket will be seeded based on points accumulated from Stage 1. In order to advance in the playoff bracket one must win a best two out of three 7-point match session.

Format

Stage 1: The Backgammon Olympiad

The Olympiad will test various backgammon skills through a series of situational events. Players will accumulate points to qualify for Stage 2. Players will be eliminated from Stage 1 when it is no longer possible to earn enough points to qualify for the playoffs.

  1. DMP
    • Four double-match-point matches, two each vs. two different opponents
    • Each match is worth 3 points, for a total of 12 points possible
  2. SpeedGammon
    • Two 5-point matches, one each vs. two different opponents
    • 2 minutes total reserve time, 10 sec/move delay
    • Each match is worth 6 points, for a total of 12 points possible
  3. Score-based scenario #1
    • Each player will play both sides of a 2-away, 4-away match against one opponent
    • Each match is worth 2 points, for a total of 4 points possible
  4. Score-based scenario #2
    • Each player will play both sides of a 3-away, 6-away match against one opponent
    • Each match is worth 4 points, for a total of 8 points possible
  5. Standard Backgammon
    • Two 7-point matches, one each vs. two different opponents
    • Each match is worth 6 points, for a total of 12 points possible
  6. Backgammon Quiz
    • There will be a 18 question quiz.
    • All players will take the quiz at the same time.
    • Players will not be able to go back and change an answer once the group has moved on to the next question.
    • The time limit is 2 minutes per question.
    • Each question is worth .2/3 of a point for a total of 12 points possible.

Stage 2: 8-Player Playoff Bracket

  • The top eight players will advance from Stage 1 to a single elimination 8-player bracket in Stage 2
  • The bracket will be seeded based on points accumulated in Stage 1.
  • Each round will be a best two out of three 7-point matches

Entry

  • $600 entry fee, 90% return
  • 1st place 50%, 2nd place 25%, 3rd/4th 12.5%. If less than 12 players (70%/30%)
  • Side pool, $200, 100% return
  • The Side pool will pay one or two places depending upon the number of entrants

Schedule

  • Tournament will start Thursday, May 25th at 12:00 PM
  • Stage 1 will be played Thursday with the following schedule (slight changes may occur if necessary)

2:30 PM Score Based Scenario Session
4:30 PM SpeedGammon Session
6:00 PM Dinner Break
7:00 PM 7-point Match
8:30 PM Backgammon Quiz
  • Stage 2 will begin on Friday with the quarterfinals stating at 11:00 AM
  • The semi-finals will start after a short break following the quarterfinals
  • The finals will be played Monday, May 29th starting at 1:00 PM**
